Marseille's rally falls short against Valenciennes

08/14/2010 - Valenciennes, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defending Ligue 1 champions Marseille slumped to their second successive defeat to start the new campaign, losing 3-2 to Valenciennes at the Stade Nungesser on Saturday.

Gael Danic put the home side ahead in the 47th minute before Gregory Pujol scored two more goals to give Valenciennes a 3-0 lead. Marseille tried to respond in the final 10 minutes with goals from Taye Taiwo and Andre Ayew, but they were unable to come up with a third.

Following a scoreless first half Valenciennes took the lead in the opening minutes of the second half as David Ducourtioux flicked a cross on to Danic for an easy finish from close range.

Ducourtioux had a hand in the second goal as well as his long throw in found the head of Pujol and he sent a well-placed header past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

Pujol then extended the lead to three goals when he benefited from some good work on the wing by Gaetan Bong, who danced past a defender and delivered a low cross that was calmly finished off by Pujol.

Marseille tried to claw back into the game eight minutes from time when Lucho Gonzalez drew a penalty kick that Taiwo converted, while Ayew reduced the deficit to one goal with a fantastic left-footed shot from the top of the area.

However, the visitors were unable to come up with another goal and they find themselves second from the bottom through two games.

Rennes recorded a 3-0 win at Nancy as the hosts had Alfred Ndiaye sent off just 13 minutes into the game, Loic Remy scored in the 69th minute to give Nice a 2-1 win against Lorient, while Auxerre earned a 1-1 draw at Brest with an 83rd-minute goal from Benoit Pedretti.

Lens claimed a 1-0 win over Arles, St Etienne downed Sochaux, 3-2, with a pair of goals from Loic Perrin and Montpellier's game at Monaco was postponed due to heavy rain.
